Lohdutus and Eri-Aaroni, not featured in this competition. Photo: Wikimedia Commons

From Kuninkaallinen kuvavisa! (Kuninkuusravit Facebook page)

This competition is not organised by this blog, but I wanted to help promoting it because I love the idea. It requires a bit of investigation work, but is not too difficult task thanks to Sukuposti‘s well organized site. I found them all, can you? :)

The idea is to find names for each horse. All the pictures come from Sukuposti database.

You can find the pictures here.

Do not comment the pictures on Facebook! Let’s give a chance for others too. ;)

  • Send your answers to kuninkuusravit@kuopionravirata.fi
  • Just a list: 1. “Horse X” 2. “X and X”.
  • Remember to give your contact information in the e-mail, so they can send you the prizes if you win. First prize is two tickets to finnhorse trotting championships weekend in July.
  • Only correct answers get to participate the raffle!
  • The competition is open until 19th of April, 2013

Translated clues for pictures:

1. What is the name of this Pikkukunkku winner?
2. Trotter king
3. Trotter king
4. Pikkuprinssi winner
5. Trotter queen
6. Trotter king
7. Trotter king
8. Trotter queen
9. Trotter queen, dam for a Derby winner
10. Trotter queen AND the king -you have to know both
11. Pikkuprinssi winner and sire for a trotter king
12. Pikkuprinssi winner

Have fun!

How to bet on Finnish horse races

Did you know that the company that organizes tote betting in Finland works also in English? Fintoto Oy is fully owned by Suomen Hippos ry, and its profits are mostly used for supporting Finnish horse industry.

Fintoto organises tote betting most often to Finnish, Swedish and French harness races. Lately they have organised tote in show jumping competitions and in Irish, UK, South African and Dubai thoroughbred races as well.

You can translate the site Fintoto.fi to English from the footer, by choosing “Englanti” under “kieli” header:

totebetting

Not everything on the site translates, but the most important part regarding to betting do. Just choose the race, the game you want to play, your horse(s) and the stakes and send it to the system. :)

Registering to the site is free. It grants you access to Toto TV video archive. Remember to check the live stream option as well, it’s not very expensive and every now and then they even offer it for free.

What bets can I place?

Fintoto’s homepage gives instructions to betting in Finnish, Swedish and Russian. Bet options are somewhat similar to what you have seen in other countries:

Voittaja (Winner) choose the horse to win the race. Horse wins -you win!

Sija (Place) if your horse places 1st, 2nd or 3rd, you win.

Kaksari  (Forecast) choose two horses to place 1st and 2nd. However, it doesn’t matter in which order these two finish, for example  if horse number 4 wins and 3 places second, both bets 3-4 and 4-3 win.

Troikka (Trifecta) choose three horses to finish first, second and third in that exact order.

Päivän Duo (Duo) Choose winners to two races specified beforehand.

Toto4 – Choose winners to four specified races.

Toto5 – Choose winners to five specified races.

Toto65 – Choose winners to six specified races. Toto65 is played only on Wednesdays at Vermo.

Toto75 – Choose winners to seven specified races. Toto75 races take place every Saturday.

Video: Siirin Älli

Siirin Älli (Liising – Siirin Piirto – Viesker) is the best 4-year-old finnhorse trotter at the moment. Nine races, seven wins and two second places, winnings of 74 600 euro. His record 1.25,5a/2100m was also noted as the new Finnish record for four-year-old coldbloods.

Will he be the new Hallsta Lotus, time will tell, but he sure has shown promising signs so far!

In this video the Kierroksilla-show visited Siirin Älli’s home stable in September 2012. Trainer Marko Taittonen tells that he doesn’t have any special recipe for a top trotter horse, this horse simply seems to be born under lucky stars. Next year’s goal is also clear: to win the Derby.

Patrikin Muisto renewed his title at Levi

Patrikin Muisto, ice king 2013

Arctic Horse Race Levi has already formed to be an annual event. Ice races are a traditional form of horse racing in Finland, taking place literally on frozen lakes. Levi lake is situated nearby the biggest ski resort in Finland, so it is also a great place for tourists to visit while enjoying their holiday in Lapland. Late March is an ideal time for the races, being most often very sunny and not too cold.

Arctic Horse Race Levi 2013 was the third of its kind and broke the new visitor record with 4 269 sold tickets. This is about 700 people more than in 2012.

Patrikin Muisto renewed his title as the Ice King. (He must have known it was the St. Patrick’s Day! ;) His winning time 1.29,3a/2100m is also the new track record, the fastest winning time ever for a finnhorse in Levi. With flat curves and the fact that the race took place on ice, this is very good. Patrikin Muisto is known as the trotter king from four years ago, and won also the Ice King title in 2011.

First trotting championship rankings

Marimin has been absolutely astonishing during the winter.

Marimin has been absolutely astonishing during this winter. This picture was taken in Tampere 2011.

The finnhorse trotting championships weekend is without doubt one of the biggest events of the year for finnhorse- and Finnish harness racing enthusiasts. We all dream of the day when we could have a trotter king or queen of our own. These horses have always been the absolute top of the breed.

The horses who get to compete for the grand prizes and glory are chosen by their earlier accomplishments. This year the point system has been changed to emphasize the more recent races, which gives the winter stars good points for this first ranking list. The ruling king Erikasson, just like many other open level stallions, hasn’t started his season yet, and these rankings will still change several times before July.

From Suomen Cup Kylmäverihevosille 2013 (jokimaanravit.fi) and Diktaattori vei Suomen Cupin 5000 euron bonusrahan Mikkeliin (hevosjalostusliitot.fi)

Lahti racetrack has revived a traditional harness racing cup, Suomen Cup, for coldblood trotters. The idea is to have the regional champions, chosen by elimination races, to compete against each other in the final, and therefore create some tension between the cheering crowds from different regions. ;)

This year the cup will have its elimination races held through March and the final takes place at Lahti 6th of April. The horses should live in the region they are wished to represent and participate the elimination race of that chosen region.

Elimination races & tracks:
Fri 8.3. Jyväskylä  Central Finland  and  Southern Savonia
Mon 11.3. Oulu   Lapland, Ostrobothnia and Kainuu
Mon 18.3. Seinäjoki  South Ostrobothnia, Middle Ostrobothnia and Svenska Österbotten
Fri 22.3. Turku  Satakunta, Häme and Varsinais-Suomi

The annual coldblood race has come to its end for this year, with satisfying results. The Norwegian trotters took both wins but the Finns and Swedes had nothing to be ashamed of either.

The Finnish fans were very happy with Keisar’s fourth place on Thursday and Jouni Törmänen promised that he felt even better after Sunday’s warm-up. And so he did improve his performance even more in this tough race, placing third.

Three-year-olds’ preliminary statistics 2012

HRP-blogi is a Finnish harness racing enthusiast’s blog where he writes about harness racing and its phenomena in Finland and other countries. He also makes annual statistics from young horses’ preliminaries.

The first preliminary is called opetuslähtö, a “training race” strictly translated. The goal is to encourage horse owners to bring their young horses to professional training already at young age and the trainers to bring the horses to tracks earlier. The time limits are 1.30-1.40 for the two-year old standardbreds, 1.50,0-2.00,0 for the three-year-old finnhorses and 2.00-2.20,0 for the two-year-old finnhorses. The horse receives a prize for trotting between those time boundaries, no other prizes are paid and this does not count neither in the horse’s winnings nor as an official start and is completely voluntary.

Before attending to official races, the horse has to attend another preliminary race, koelähtö in Finnish (strictly translated “test race”), in which the speed is faster. In this preliminary the horse shows that it is fit enough to race and is schooled to behave on the track. One preliminary is valid for eight months and if there are no races in between, the horse has to perform another preliminary to qualify again.

These are the brief statistics from 2012. You can see the full statistics here (tip: mares are highlighted with red and 2-year-olds with *).

Just out of general interest, I counted the three-year-olds in races annually between 1995 and 2012, here’s a graph:

graph (6)

It is not very common to bring the three-year-old horses to races rather than wait until they turn four. Finnhorse is considered as a slow breed to mature. The trend is, however, to favour the younger horses in race schedules to make the horse breeding cycle faster as well (so horses would race younger, show their potential and therefore breed younger than they do now). Naturally the amount of born horses in an age class shows in racing statistics as well.

Suikku’s influence is undeniable

When talking about modern finnhorse pedigrees, Suikku is one of the names that pops up constantly. He was a good trotter of his time, fast, matured early, won big age-class races, made a successful career as a trotter with records 1.24,3a and 1.26,9 but was never crowned as a trotter king. Yet he managed to have a huge offspring of 1240 horses, one of the biggest ever, and his son Turo even beat that record with his 1249 foals offspring, so you could say these names are getting very common in modern finnhorse pedigrees.

Get to know the finnhorse -brochure wrote about Veijo Toivonen, who remembers Suikku well:

“Veijo Toivonen from Orimattila has made a remarkable career in collecting Finnhorse  information first as a reporter and as an active member of the trotting association, later on as a keeper of a stud station and publisher of the Horsebreeding book series.

‘Suikku, driven by Tuomo Mäkelä in the 1980’s  has probably been the most talented  Finnhorse stallion that has been a stud at  our place. It never won the king title, but it had bad luck. But the leading studs in the sire statistics, Turo and Hovi-Ari, are its descendants, as well as the super trotter Sipori  (1.19,4a) and three-time Trotting Queen I.P. Sukkula. The sire line of Suikku comes from the star of the 1920’s and 1930s, Murto.  Murto and its son Eri-Aaroni have been the most influential individuals in the Finnhorse  breed. Nowadays their names appear in the family trees of nearly every Finnhorse.”

Horse of the year-voting is open

From Ravigaalassa palkitaan vuoden parhaat (Hippos.fi)

The annual Ravigaala (Trot Gala) awards the best horses, trainers and drivers for their accomplishments. Three of the awards are chosen by voting, and these three are Trainer of the year, Driver of the year, and the most interesting for many, Horse of the year award. There are traditionally two warmblood trotters and two finnhorses to choose from, this year those four are the rising international star Brad de Veluwe, furious racing mare She Loves You, ruling trotter king Erikasson and queen Sirun Valpuriina.

(Vuoden valmentaja=trainer of the year, Vuoden ohjastaja=driver of the year, Vuoden hevonen=horse of the year, Yhteystiedot=contact information, Nimi=name, Osoite=address, Puhelinnumero=phone, Sähköposti=e-mail).

The voting is open until 14th of December. All voters have a chance to win one of the five 100€ gift vouchers to Finn-Tack!

The Ravigaala takes place 18th of January in Tampere, Finland.
