Jarmo Korkeaniemi bought Suikun Lukko as a yearling. Suikun Lukko’s very well-built legs and hooves caught his eye at first. The colt was also very co-operative and kind. The best thing in this colt was that there were no downsides, Jarmo smiles. The horse has always been exceptionally humble towards human.

Suikun Lukko made an impressive career as a trotter: he placed third in Erilo-race as a five-year-old, placed second in finnhorse monté championship race in 2005 ridden by Tiia Tirkkonen and made a new Finnish record in monté at the age of 14, ridden by Susanne Klemola.

In the year 2012 he became the work horse champion. His trot time was 1.33 and walk 5.50. He pulled 19,2 stairs. Working has been a part of his training since the beginning, Jarmo and Suikun Lukko started with bringing firewood home when he was three years old. After his trotter career he has had a job as carriage horse in weddings and other special occasions, and Jarmo says Suikun Lukko is also his “personal therapy horse”, making every grey thoughts disappear once he harnesses his beloved horse.

Suikun Lukko has also tried a few other disciplines: he has attended in horse swimming competitions held annually at Kurikka. He hasn’t won anything from those competitions, being more interested in enjoying the nice, cool water than swimming fast. Another interesting fact is that he has also been shown at endurance riding competitions.

Work horses are back in fashion

From Työhevoskurssit täpötäynnä (yle.fi 15.1.2013 by Siru Päivinen, shortened translation)

Poika Tuisku, photo from the original article (Yle)

This is a true Finnish heritage sight: crisp winter weather, temperature just below zero, the sun is shining and a handsome, flaxen-mained horse harnessed in front of a traditional sleigh is waiting for passengers. More and more people wish to live in this view.

Työhevosharrastajat is a Finnish work horse club that operates under Suomenratsut ry.  They arrange courses in traditional harnessing, agriculture work and logging. The courses have showed to be extremely popular, especially among young urban women.

One of these courses took place in Tuulikummun Tila, Kiihtelyysvaara, in North Karelia. It was a surprise for the stable owner Heidi Meuranen that so many people came a long way to learn about work horses -most of them from Southern Finland, several hundred kilometers away!

- This was the first course we arranged. We thought we could offer the local horse people to get to know working with finnhorses, but it was filled in moments with southern participants. That was a surprise.

Finnhorse reflects the Finnish heritage

Horses have made their way back to Finnish countryside. Horse industry has been growing for the past years, and finnhorse as a part of it. The biggest amount of horses ever was in 1950, when there were altogether 410 000 horses in Finland. The mechanization in agriculture put many horses out of work after that. The lowest number of horses was in the early 1980s, when there were only about 31 000 horses left. As the standard of living grew, horses became more and more popular as a hobby. Finnhorses got accompanied by warmbloods, ponies, Icelandic horses, Norwegian fjords and other foreign breeds, and their work field was more and more often on the race track and as riding horses rather than work horses.

At the moment there are altogether about 76 000 horses in Finland, and about 16 000 stables. Horses have been the only growing form of agriculture industry in the 21st century.

Knowledge and learning

During the few “darker decades” the traditional horsemanship was slowly disappearing. Nowadays the native Finnish horse and traditional horsemanship and working is making its way back to fashion. People are looking for teachers -old horsemen.

- My work horse hobby started with horses that came to the farm with the wife. So we built a stable for the horses. I was more interested in this traditional horsemanship rather than riding, being interested in old Finnish culture overall. Since we had the horses and the abilities, we decided to organize a course for the interested, told Anssi Okkonen, one of the course leaders.

Okkonen believes that this rising interest to work horses is a part of need to calm down, get back to nature. Urban people come to these courses for experiences and get out of their busy city lifes for a change. Some people even want to stay permanently, so they find a house at the countryside and most of the time these dreams include a small stable -and a finnhorse.

Poika Tuisku

Meuranen family looked for a flaxen-mained finnhorse in particular, and found one six years ago. Poika Tuisku raised hopes for a trotter career at first, but his speed was not enough for the track. Instead he has proven himself a really good horse for riding and working.

- This horse is my precious, I could even say the horse of my life. Tuisku is a bit stubborn sometimes, but I happily allow that for a good horse. He’s also very honest and hard-working, tells Heidi Meuranen about the gelding which she owns with her husband Jouni Meuranen.

Heidi’s way to work horses was a common one -through saddle. At the moment a sleigh is as familiar to her as the saddle, and she tells that driving and working are good change for riding.

Atmosphere and nostalgia

Along with Meuranen couple, older horsemen Eino Leikas and Veikko Ripatti were called to offer the course participants knowledge about the traditional working with horses along with younger instructor Anssi Okkonen. The course offered learning in practice; by learning to harness real horses, driving with work sleighs, bringing wood from the forest and so on.

- Practice makes perfect, you can’t learn these things properly in theory, says Heidi. Getting to know different ways to work with horses opens one’s mind to new ideas as well, and a finnhorse is a true multipurpose horse.

Hilton Hurra has a quite rare pedigree, his sire line leads to Kirppu and maternal line leads to Hali. Hali’s line is told to produce horses with great working moral, same as Kirppu’s line, and Hilton Hurra truly lives up to these expectations. Pekka Raudasoja tells that he likes horses of this pedigree since they are very friendly and well-serving by nature. Anna says that Pekka is a walking dictionary of finnhorse pedigrees, so he is worth listening to.

Anna Hälvä began training Hilton Hurra for riding in 2008.The stallion has shown potential in riding, being a faithful worker and eager learner he has been easy to train. He was inspected for T-studbook with a driving test in 2010 and competes also  in dressage and show jumping with increasingly improving results. Hilton Hurra is a result of successful co-operation between a dressage rider, an old-school horseman and a harness racing trainer. By combining the know-how of each discipline the results can be this good: a horse that can do anything.

Coldblood trotters of the North

jarvsofaks

Swedish Järvsöfaks ruled the north for years before his retirement

I have written quite a few posts about trotter finnhorses, but all of the northernmost Scandinavia is known for their coldblood trotters. The coldbloods compete in their own races as a part of harness racing scheme as well as the standardbreds and French trotters. Sweden and Norway have their own coldblood trotter breeds and the Finnish use mostly finnhorses.  Finnish races are also most often open for Swedish and Norwegian coldbloods as well, but so far other countries offer races for finnhorses not as often.

But what kind of horses are these coldblood trotters (kaldblodstraver) are and what makes them different? Mostly they are very similar: heavier draft horses have been bred with lighter type horses, pursuing lighter body structure and speed in trot. They are all good for any discipline though most often used in harness racing.

The records are currently held by Swedish and Norwegian trotters but the Finnish still stand up for their own horses by stating that Finnish horse is still the fastest breed in general, not just relying on a few exceptionally talented individuals. I haven’t seen any official statistics, but as the best of all three breeds meet in Nordic championship races annually at Turku, it has been so for the few last years that the gold medal has been taken to Norway or Sweden but the Finnish horses have come in to places from second to fifth quite often.

There could be more co-operation in northern harness racing, I’m not necessarily meaning crossbreeding (there has been discussion about that too) but for starters giving space and racing opportunities to all of them, equally between the three countries?

What do you think?

Anything is easy with Hiluten Virite

From Kuukauden työhevonen: Hiluten Virite (työhevosharrastajat.net)

Hiluten Virite

Hiluten Virite 2225-02PTa

b. 20.4 2002
s. Hilute
d. Virimo
Breeder Elina Hokkanen, Tuusula

Hiluten Virite is owned by Jarkko Hokkanen and his daughter Elina. Both her sire and dam were also Hokkanen family’s horses. Virite is a true multipurpose horse, since she has had time to try harness racing, draft work and has also been ridden. Being a pony-sized finnhorse makes her good for any finnhorse breeding section. Virite has performed in various occasions, for example in weddings, and offered young people their first touch to horses in riding. The smaller the rider, the more careful is the horse, says Jarkko. Being born and raised next to a fireworks factory, Virite felt like home when she starred in a short tv-series Tauno Tukevan Sota (Tauno Tukeva’s war), the closest bang being shot only 40cm behind the horse.

Virite has had one foal, sired by El Vihuri, which is also Jarkko’s own horse. Hiluten Virite has been inspected to P- (pony-sized) studbook with 1st prize and 39 points and Ta-(work horse with driveability test) studbook with 2nd prize and 40 points. Jarkko recalls the first inspection going just as planned, when the judge handed Virite’s reins back to Jarkko and described the horse with one word -Perfect.

Folkswagen: Suomenhevonen (with English lyrics)

I have posted this song before, but it has been a while. No Finn who loves finnhorses can listen to this with dry eyes, I think. Another tribute for the horses who helped to build Finland as we know it.

Where would we be without you
you four-legged, light-maned
moist-muzzled
friend, Finnhorse

I have no other earthly possessions,
the heaven’s roof, road’s carpet
forest trees for walls
for a friend, the Finnhorse

My grandfather cleared the fields
oats soon flowered, where the plough flew, –
be kind, horse
our friend, Finnhorse

As guns blazed in the Carelian isthmus
in the frost and snow
you were more reliable than the machine
our friend Finnhorse

These villages are empty
no roads cleared and the old left behind
but yet there are some
and some horses, too

When I leave this place
this road and roadsides
this slippery ice of a wintery road
bury me by my horse

For where would we be without you
you four-legged, light-maned
moist-muzzled
friend, Finnhorse

Kyllikki will not rush

From Kuukauden Työhevonen: Kyllikki (työhevosharrastajat.net)

Kyllikki

KYLLIKKI 1216-02T

b. 10.5 2002
s. Poika-Luri
d. V.T. Trulli
Breeder & owner Niilo Juselius, Sipoo

Kyllikki’s breeder Niilo Juselius tells that she has never rushed anywhere. Even giving birth to her took much longer than usually. She was a calm and considering foal as well, it was easy to teach her everything she needs for a work horse’s career. She is humble and hard worker, who stays still as long as it takes. Niilo says that not everyone agrees that Kyllikki actually does what is asked from her, but they have worked well together.

Kyllikki has been inspected for studbook with driveability test. Usually she works for show in different events, such as weddings and other occasions. Niilo doesn’t advertise much, but the word goes around and carriage rides are asked quite much. Before retirement Niilo and his horses worked for Helsinki city management.

Horses mobilized the army

From Kankaanpään seudun tykistökilta by Pekka Termala, this is my slightly shortened translation from the original article

The Finns honour their horses for making the army mobile during the Winter- and Continuation wars. No motorized vehicle could compare to a horse in cross country. For road logistics a horse was slower and couldn’t take as much load as a car, though.

Photo: Artillery Museum

Getting ready for Kiesi event in August 2009

Horses where used in transporting gear, ammunition, food, mobile kitchens, the wounded, the fallen, biggest artillery and they also served the riding messengers. Some horses transported feed to others. It took eight horses to pull the biggest guns. Standard carriage for a horse was 300 kg.

Finnish Defence Forces had horses until 1993, and artillery department educated horsemen until 1971. The last horse-driven guns attended an army practice in 1969. The Niinisalo Riders and Kankaanpää Artillery Guild (Kankaanpään Seudun Tykistökilta) decided to take the horse heritage in artillery to their agenda. There are only a few similar horse-mobilised artillery units in Europe.

The gun is pulled by two pairs of horses. There is one soldier per two horses to guide them. The gun is a Russian 76 mm field cannon, from the year 1902. The gun and its wagon weight approximately 1500 kg, and the field of range was about 10,8 km. The group performs in different occasions and parades.

Viriella doesn’t take days off

Kuukauden työhevonen: Viriella (tyohevosharrastajat.net)

Viriella 1171-00T

born 12.5 2000
sire Vokkerilla
dam Vietteen Tyttö
breeder Kari Hölsö, Ylistaro

Viriella, nicknamed Elli, was five years old as she came under Matti Vuori and Lotta Mikkola’s ownership. Lotta had had horses before, for Matti this was his first horse ever. Though he had had his first touch to horses already at his childhood home, he was too young to remember any of it.

This mare felt like the one right as they met. She had trotted a few starts and begun her training for sleigh, so it was easy to continue schooling her as a work horse. Elli has never been frightened of any machines they have harnessed her in, even the loudly rattling rake machine won’t disturb her calm. Elli has been very versatile for any work around the year. During the winter she helps bringing firewood, and during the summer cutting the hay is her speciality. The steady puller can just lean on the collar and get going.

This soft-looking, round mare reminds of a chubby, hard-working farm mistress. Matti sais she is a fearless worker, who thinks fun rides are useless. The bigger an heavier the carriage, the better she goes, but pulling a lighter church sleigh is more like a fly trying to get forward in tar… Maybe it’s because of the audience, but she has also worked as model for work horse courses and starred in a mini TV-series called Tauno Tukevan sota (Tauno Tukeva’s war, Yle).

Viriella has been inspected for work horse studbook with 2nd prize and 39 points. They wondered carefully which one would be better way to inspect her, with driveability or pulling test. Since many of the older horsemen think that pulling test is the only right way to inspect a horse for work horse studbook, they decided to go with it. And it was the right decision, Elli pulled until the jury was out of weight rocks, they asked for a few men from the audience to step on the test sleigh to add more weight, since the horse wasn’t looking tired at all. Elli’s humor was gone though, she just looked back and wouldn’t take another step, as she was saying “I’m not pulling all of you!”

Elli is a very stubborn character. She feels like knowing better than the driver, where the sleigh is going and can turn into a completely different horse if she is having a bad day. You’ll never know what mood she is in when the dawn breaks, tells Matti.

Finnhorses performed at The Era of Autonomy festival

From suomenratsut.fi news 22.9.12

photo: Mtv3.fi

This was the first time the festival was organized and it gathered a decent amount of people to Senaatintori market square to introduce themselves to the 19th century life and culture.

One especially interesting feature in the festival seemed to be the amount of horses, as Suomenratsut (finnhorse riders’ association) and Työhevosharrastajat (work horse club) organized popular events and horses for the day.

Popular Finnish actor, also known for his riding career, Ville Virtanen, played ceremony master Anton Cronstedt and one of the biggest events was his ride to Senaatintori on a magnificent black stallion. Helsinki has been the capital of Finland since 1812, for two hundred years.

Personal view on finnhorses

Ennin Epeli, photo by Sini Tuhkunen

I have meant to write more personally about finnhorses; why is it this particular horse breed that has become my favourite. I have told before on the about-page that there were a few finnhorses that I got to know as I was younger, beginning with horses, and they got to leave their hoofprints on my heart deeper than others. I know these are clichés that you most often hear, but I believe people wouldn’t repeat them so much if they weren’t true.

Character

Finnhorses are calm and mostly easy-going horses, yet they can be stubborn and one has to earn their true respect, but after that they would climb a tree for you. Altogether they are the most honest horses I have met, they give nothing for free but always let you try again and if they decide to leave the place, they just leave, they don’t try to stomp the rider as flat as possible on the way. That makes them so good horses for riding schools, it’s rare for them to get completely crazy and jumpy all for nothing. Humble, hard-working horses, yet each of them still has a unique personality.

I am sure that these horses are so versatile for any sport because they are so calm, yet curious and as told, once you earn their respect, they’ll do anything for you. After that it’s just a case of trying, schooling and selective breeding.

Rarity

Well, yes, there are about 20 000 finnhorses to date, but it’s still a rare breed in world scale. That is a fascinating fact, since it is just as good as any pony or sport horse or cob that has been bred crossing warmbloods with heavier draughts. I believe this is mostly a marketing thing, the Finns haven’t got faith in their own horses and believe that foreign is always better. I think it doesn’t take a fundamental nationalist to appreciate the work that has been done over the past 105 years and think that a Finn is just as good as any other.

Looks

Yet a modern finnhorse has come a long way from the earlier draft horses, it is still a strong-structured, decent-sized, a bit pony-like yet still a horse. I think they are simply beautiful.

Vinpotar the versatile

Kuukauden työhevonen: Vinpotar (työhevosharrastajat.net)

mare
b. 9.11.2002
s. Poika-Patrik
d. Viriva
owner Matti Makkonen
breeder Matti Keskinen

When Matti Makkonen was looking for a future work horse for himself, his eye catched the three-year-old Vinpotar. She wasn’t particurlarly special in any way, but she was a good, decent horse without hopes for trotter’s career, so she was sold quite cheap. She was young and nice-tempered, and liked being around people. Though she wasn’t fast enough to be a trotter, she was way too frisky for a work horse at first. Only as older age she has learned to stay still when harnessed, thanks to her patient master. Nowadays she works around the year in different tasks at their home farm with all machines necessary. They have also participated in a few plowing and pulling contests.

Vinpotar has received also riding schooling, and Makkonen family have been thinking about having more of these four-legged children some day.

Yrkkö

stallion
s. 11.7 1992
s. Hilto
d. Osman-Vappu
Owner Matti Jarva
Breeder Heikki Jarva

Yrkkö was homebred by Jarva brothers, representing the third generation of work horses of Pääkkölä farm in Piippola. He got his name from a very tough, small worker stallion Yrkkö who was owned by Matti’s father Heikki after the wars.

Yrkkö has truly redeemed his name, he has grown a fine work horse. It feels like the horse reads Matti’s mind, and has brought every log home. Their record is over hundred cubics of log in one winter.

Yrkkö’s work is seasonal, the cultivation work on fields is done mostly with tractor. He has also performed on television and pulled wedding carriages.
Matti likes stallions, he has a young four-year-old growing up on the same farm. He is called Ihmeen-Urho, maybe a future successor for Yrkkö. “Anyone can have fish and bread -only a few get to have a good horse!” says Matti.

Vilpotar, the gentle giant

Kuukauden työhevonen: Vilpotar (tyohevosharrastajat.net)

b. 26.7.1997
s. Vispok 1918-87J
d. Vilma-Neiti 1127-81J

Vilpotar, nicknamed Viltsu, is homebred by Taina and Markku Mässeli, the gentle giant with her height of 167cm at withers. Markku had planned a trotting career for her, but since she had more easy-going nature than a trotter maybe should, Markku thought she might be better at work horse’s profession. She is unbelievably kind by nature, even small children can lead and groom her without any concern. She is always ready to work, easy to ride and drive.

Vilpotar and Markku have competed in work horse contests. She placed second in 2009. Markku joked to co-contestants at Kannus 2011, that they should win since they had the longest way from home -650km. Did she listen to him or not, Vilpotar brought home the 2500€ first prize and the title of Work horse champion in 2011. They have also participated in Finnish horse plowing championships placing second, paired with another finnhorse mare Lento-Suukko. This year’s main goal is to defend the championship at Jyväskylä.

Vilpotar has not required any special training for the contests, since she works daily at home ranch on everyday tasks. She has foaled twice, gelding Aarteen Etsijä (2008, sire Aarteen Aprik), is aiming for harness races. The second foal, colt Viltraus (s. Valtraus) had to be put down as six months old due to an accident.

Suikun Lukko is the new Finnish work horse champion

From tyohevosharrastajat.fi

Stallion Suikun Lukko 1324-95J, (Suikun Ero – Luonto-Riina, Luonnos) has switched from harness racing to work horse’s profession. He showed clearly to be the fastest horse in the contest by trotting the test in 1.33 km-time (his records are 24,6a in harness and m26,4a in monté) and walk in 5.50, clearly faster than any other contestant. Yet after pulling 19 stairs in the pulling test he had confirmed to be the clear winner this year. Formerly he has placed third in Erilo-race in 2000 and second in monté championships in 2005 -another of the many examples of a versatile, great finnhorse!

Work horse championships crowns finnhorse’s versatility

Background

Finnhorse has been purebred for about 100 years. At first the selection was made purely by horse’s looks and body structure, but already in the 1920s the inspection was changed to measuring the horse’s performance at work. Since then the horses have also competed in pulling heavy loads. Since it is all about finnhorse’s versatility, measuring walk- and trotting times is still a part of Finnish work horse championships. Finnhorses still have an outstanding pulling technique in their genes, which makes them equivalent to even challenge much more bigger and heavier draft horses.

In the 1970s the horse breeding in Finland went historically low, the pulling contests also went on hiatus for a few years. But since 1984 this traditional show of horses’ skills and horsemanship was reawaken. Since then, Suomen Hippos has organized an annual Finnish work horse championships with co-operation of local horse breeding associations.

The participants challenge each other in three partial tests: 1000m trotting test, 500m walk with 500kg load and pulling test, with a sleigh on sand. The starting weight is about 500kg and the load grows 50kg in every 20m. The winner is the horse that gets the most points from these three tests.

Pekka Vilkuna’s contest

Hilippa-sculpture is a challenge cup for national work horse championships participants. It was first given in Turku 2007 and works as a challenge cup for the next ten years, until 2017. Every year the sculpture is given to the annual champion, but after ten years it is given to the horse with most points from the last 10 championship contests.
