What is the deal with pony-sized finnhorses?

Pony-sized finnhorse, small horse, yet not a pony, but in my opinion a bit more describing term would be “finnpony”. One breeding section of the finnhorse, but
What is it actually?
Finnhorse was originally a small horse breed to start with, standing 105-130 cm in height. Crossbreeding gave them bigger size in pursue of strong working horses, resulting in the modern, 150-160 cm high finnhorses by average.
P-studbook was founded in 1971, when there was only a small population of these pony-sized horses left. There are breeders who are looking for these smaller individuals. The criteria for P-studbook is pretty similar to other pony breeds: the horse has to stand 148 cm or below at highest and be well proportioned, meaning small in every aspect, not just a big horse with short legs. Inspection consists of showing and riding or driving tests, which do not include very difficult tasks and passing is considered generally easier than to other studbooks.
So you could say that the P-studbook was founded to answer the growing demand of riding ponies. Importing riding horses and ponies grew vastly in the 70′s. Nowadays finnhorses have made their way to riding arenas but pony-sized finnhorses seem to be left behind. Or is this just my feeling?

What can you do with them?
Short answer: Anything.
Longer answer: Most often Finnponies are used for riding and driving. They are advertised as a multipurpose pony, since you can race them, ride them or use them as work horses same as the bigger ones, the only limit being the horse’s small size, which on the other hand makes them good for pony classes in riding and combined driving. A few finnponies have already shown their skills in combined driving, for example Hessin Vihtori and Vuohimäen Havu both placed in international Baltic Cup in 2012 and also in the Finnish championships.
Personally I think that the biggest problem in riding competitions are the age limitations for riders. After you turn 16, you either have to take your pony to open classes against bigger horses or switch to horses yourself. This means that very few adult riders are seen in the saddles of ponies in Finland. Luckily the Pony-sized Finnhorse Association has noticed this flaw as well and organizes their championships for both senior and junior riders on finnponies. But that’s only once a year…
There are also a few successful trotters that are pony-sized, the most famous of them must be stallion called Liptus, who competed altogether 412 times in his career with record 1.21,4 and over 300 000 € winnings, standing only 144 cm in height. Most often small horses are considered less good for racing, though, since the horses with longer legs seem to get an obvious advantage on the track.
Finnpony has its own fan base, but from the marketing point of view it could have a bit clearer brand so it would be easier to introduce to new people and possible buyers and future breeders. “Anything, but not exactly everything” doesn’t work very well as a motto for today’s market.

Hiluten Virite is owned by Jarkko Hokkanen and his daughter Elina. Both her sire and dam were also Hokkanen family’s horses. Virite is a true multipurpose horse, since she has had time to try harness racing, draft work and has also been ridden. Being a pony-sized finnhorse makes her good for any finnhorse breeding section. Virite has performed in various occasions, for example in weddings, and offered young people their first touch to horses in riding. The smaller the rider, the more careful is the horse, says Jarkko. Being born and raised next to a fireworks factory, Virite felt like home when she starred in a short tv-series Tauno Tukevan Sota (Tauno Tukeva’s war), the closest bang being shot only 40cm behind the horse.
Virite has had one foal, sired by El Vihuri, which is also Jarkko’s own horse. Hiluten Virite has been inspected to P- (pony-sized) studbook with 1st prize and 39 points and Ta-(work horse with driveability test) studbook with 2nd prize and 40 points. Jarkko recalls the first inspection going just as planned, when the judge handed Virite’s reins back to Jarkko and described the horse with one word -Perfect.

As the owner takes their foal (1-3 years of age) to a foal show, they can choose which breeding section the foal will have its evaluation (different breeding sections have somewhat different goals). At the age of four or older mares and stallions may be shown for studbook.
The pony-sized finnhorse association (Suomenpienhevosyhdistys) updates their website actively, and posts all the foals that have received a P-section evaluation as well as new studbook horses. I collected them all in one post for you to take a look at. Studying show results can provide a good overall sight on a horse breed, or in this case a breeding section.

The last annual inspection for finnhorse and warmblood trotter stallions was held last week. Five new studs made it through the test and got their official licenses for breeding.
All horses get points from their body structure and character, trotter horses (J) show their gaits and driveability on the track in a driveability test and riding horses (R) ridden in dressage, show jumping and rideability with a rider other than his own. Pony-sized finnhorses (P) have a choise between rideability and driveability test and work horses redeem themselves either by driveability (Ta) or heavyweight pulling test (T). Driveability tests are, of course, a bit different for different breeding sections, but they basically test this horses’s ability to work in a given assignment of trotting, carriage driving or draft. This year’s Harju inspection showed all four breeding sections with two inspected trotter stallions, one riding horse, one work horse and one pony-sized horse.

Three finnhorses at Baltic Cup finals in Vilnius

Always so nice to receive good news from international show grounds!
Finnhorses, especially pony-sized, have really shown their suitability for carriage driving. Last weekend the Baltic Cup finals were driven in Vilnius, Lithuania. Hessin Vihtori and Vuohimäen Havu placed first and second in the Baltic Pony Cup final, driven by Hannu and Leena Kalalahti. Hessin Muusa and Heidi Sinda performed well in horse class and got the final Cup silver medal for Finland. Great job!

If you haven’t seen this publication yet, I’d suggest you to read it. This brochure was made in 2007 and offers quite good basic information about finnhorses both in history and today. Their versatility is well shown, lively graphics as well as multiple photos make learning fun.
Even if you are familiar with the breed already, have a look. As much as I have read about Finnish horses in the past, I still learned new things from this brochure. There are versions in Finnish, English, Swedish and German. Enjoy!

Eventing championships 2012

Pony-sized finnhorses have their own championship contests in dressage, show jumping and eventing. This years last championship weekend was held at Niinisalo on 22nd-23rd of September. Prizes were 50€ – 30€ – 20€, medals for the best three, rug for winner and other smaller prizes for next places. The championships contests are open to pony-sized finnhorses whose owner or rider is a member of the pony-sized finnhorse association.

32 pony-sized finnhorses in the National Pony Show 2012

This year altogether 32 pony-sized finnhorses are stepping in the show ring at Vermo in August, as the national pony show takes place 18th-19th of August 2012 at Vermo race track in Espoo. This annual pony show is organized by six pony breed organizations in Finland: the Connemara-, New Forest-, Shetland pony-, Gotland russ-, Welsh- and Pony-sized Finnhorse association are combining their forces and having a major event with about 500 ponies participating annually, in association with the local horse breeding association, Tapiola insurance company, Hippos, Vermo race track and Finnish Horse Owners’ Association.
This is even better than last year, when there were 26 pony-sized finnhorses. See the results here.

Just something little less serious for a change. I found some fun blog challenges (you may challenge me if you have something in your mind, that would be fun) and decided to make a list of finnhorses from A to Z (plus umlauts Ä (ae) and Ö (oe), Å since the Finnish alphabet includes them too. :))
- And yes, there would have been many good horses to many of the letters, but I had to choose one. ;)
A – Alarik 134, one of the studs from finnhorse’s early years
B – Bogatir, the first R-studbooked stallion
C – Corleone, the finnhorse dressage champion 2011
D – Docka, a first-prize mare from the early years of finnhorse’s studbook
E – Eino, the founder one of the four till existing sire lines
F – Feelis must be one of the best known finnhorses in France after participating twice to Prix des Pays Nordiques in Vincennes.
G – Gustav Dahlia, the Pikkukunkku winner, Derby and Tawastjerna Memorial silver medalist 2011
H – Hippos, born 1891, was referred as one of the most perfectly structured horses the studbook committee had ever seen.
I – Ihme-Toti, trotter king 1962 (and several placements)
J – Jaakko Tt 118, founder of one of the four still remaining sire lines, probably the most common through Eri-Aaroni.
K – Kirppu Tt 710, founder of another of the few remaining sire lines
L – Laippa, the Finnish work horse champion 2006, silver medalist 2008 & 2010
M – Murto, sire of Eri-Aaroni, trotter king 1926 and 1929
N – Nynny, mother of 17, 7 of which star- or quality trotters (record 1.30,0 and below)
O – Onnipoika, a black R-stud
P – Pette, multiple big race winner, J- and R-studbooked stallion
Q – Quutar, the only finnhorse to have a name that begins with Q. Sorry, no photo yet.. :D
R – Reipas the wonder gelding, races 1300 starts in his career with 348 wins.
S – Suikku, has 1240 offspring, undoubtably has had a great influence on modern finnhorse.
T – Topi, another wonder gelding, grand championship winner 1964-1965
U – Uljaanpoika, whose sire line has continued to this date
V – Vonkaus the wonder gelding raced over 700 starts with 317 wins
W – Wilmatilda, a P-studbooked mare
X – Xavier Hagby, former trotter, gelded 2002, competed in regional show jumping contests
Y – Ypäjä Tarja, owned by the former president of Finland Tarja Halonen
Z – Zimone, just a nice-looking J-studbook mare :)
Å – found no horses
Å – Äijön Kierna, a silver dapple black pony-sized finnhorse mare
