Splashed white gene found in finnhorses

From Klemola oli oikeassa: Suomenhevosessa on Splashed White-kirjavuusgeeni! (Leena Alerini at Hevosurheilu.fi 11.5.2013)

Intiaani is a splashed white! (photo from the source article at hevosurheilu.fi)

It has been widely argued wether this rare color gene exists in finnhorses or not. Valto Klemola, a scientist who researched color genetics already in the 1930s, said it did, and now his theory has been proved true. Splashed white is said to be extremely rare and wanted color on horses.

There are multiple examples of finnhorses with exceptionally big white markings, both in living horses and in old photos. But still there seems to have been some lack of evidence that wasn’t known until now. The gene test had to wait until 2012. It was made in Davis University in California, and the test showed that this gene is indeed found in the finnhorse.

The horse that was tested is called Intiaani. She was tested for splashed white and sabino genes. Sabino test came out negative, but the current gene technology can only find one of the many mutations that gives the sabino coloring, so she might be a carrier of some other mutation. Intiaani is a heterozygous splashed white, which means that she got it from either her sire Turtuma or dam R.R. Vilma.

Experiencing foal fever…

tamma09_04_13_pieni

Mommy in a few months? First foal expected to be born in July, fingers crossed! Thanks for the photo Roosa L. (9.4.2013)

It seems that summer will be here soon. That big yellow bulb has been reported to be seen in the sky every now and then, the snow is melting -and many foals of 2013 have already been born!

My Facebook wall is full of photos of those tiny, ever-so-cute creatures trying to figure out their spider-like long legs, seeing and tasting the world… And soon galloping big circles around their mom outside in the field. Needless to say I can’t wait to see our first foal to be born in July.

Sumiainen

Sumiainen, photo by Peppi-Emilia Salmi

The sire of this next king/queen is the 1st prize R-stallion Sumiainen. He unfortunately died in October 2012, so this will be his last age-class. He succeeded well in national dressage arenas as well as in show ring  for years and has sired 7 foals until 2012. This little one will be a rarity! :)

The “foal project” as we like to call it with my friend, started last summer first just as a joke, but it caught on quite quickly and soon we were looking at stallion ads -why not?! The Finnish summer is short, the ideal time for a foal to be born would be May or June to provide them the longest possible time for grazing outside. Still we weren’t too slow with the decisions and the first covering was an instant success. A few weeks later we could start thinking about the possible names we could be giving to this newcomer.

So far the winter has gone by the book with no problems whatsoever. I can only hope that the foaling will be like that as well and Elyse will prove herself as a good mother.  Luckily we have one other mare foaling in the same stable this summer, and she has had a few foals so there is also support available for the newbie. ;)

(We are semi-secretly hoping for a flaxen-mained colt, but we’ll see…)

Finnish Cup 2013

From Suomen Cup Kylmäverihevosille 2013 (jokimaanravit.fi) and Diktaattori vei Suomen Cupin 5000 euron bonusrahan Mikkeliin (hevosjalostusliitot.fi)

Lahti racetrack has revived a traditional harness racing cup, Suomen Cup, for coldblood trotters. The idea is to have the regional champions, chosen by elimination races, to compete against each other in the final, and therefore create some tension between the cheering crowds from different regions. ;)

This year the cup will have its elimination races held through March and the final takes place at Lahti 6th of April. The horses should live in the region they are wished to represent and participate the elimination race of that chosen region.

Elimination races & tracks:
Fri 8.3. Jyväskylä  Central Finland  and  Southern Savonia
Mon 11.3. Oulu   Lapland, Ostrobothnia and Kainuu
Mon 18.3. Seinäjoki  South Ostrobothnia, Middle Ostrobothnia and Svenska Österbotten
Fri 22.3. Turku  Satakunta, Häme and Varsinais-Suomi
Wed 27.3. Vermo  Southern Finland, Kymi-Karelia and Nylands län
Fri 29.3. Kuopio   North Karelia and  Northern Savonia

Does the color matter?

From Johannan suomenhevossivut (12.2.2013)

Rohkelikon Armas 2053-05R is one of the newest inspected studs

Rohkelikon Armas 2053-05R is one of the newest inspected studs. Photo by Hippos/Eero Perttunen

Johanna has made a huge amount of work collecting all rare colored (non-chestnut that is) inspected finnhorse studs of all studbooks. Every now and then there are people looking for studs of certain color, and this list made to help those people without taking any sides in the argument whether the coat color is an important aspect of horse breeding or not.

The list of sabinos is made by looks of the horses, there is no 100% certainty that all of these horses carry the gene.

Finnhorse crosses

The Finnhorse might be the perfect cross with the beloved Gypsy Vanner to produce size and athletic ability without sacrificing temperament. Since the Finnhorse is a larger coldblood I believe the Gypsy Vanner Finnhorse cross would be considered a Drumhorse. The Finnhorse might also be the perfect cross to produce the Georgian Grande when crossed with the American Saddlebred. The Finnhorse Georgian Grande should prove a better mover and more athletic than the Saddlebred Draft horse cross. The real market here for Finnhorses might be fresh cooled semen or frozen semen. If we could get one Finnhorse stallion here who is large and a good mover, we could prove this theory. For the American market he must have a beautiful head. Flaxen mane would be great, Palomino would be great, Silver Dapple would be very marketable also, and black. However, size and a good mover is the most important. (Susan’s Comment to poll “Would you consider a finnhorse, if you were buying a horse right now?”)

Thank you for your comment, Susan!

Those crosses sure do sound interesting, I believe no one has ever tried them!

Crossing finnhorses with other breeds is somewhat a tabu subject for the Finns. It’s understandable, we can’t bring any new blood from anywhere. All in all Finnish horse breeders are often quite strict with the pure breeding issues unless the cross is officially accepted somewhere, whatever horse or pony breed in question, and especially in case of our beloved finnhorse.

Every now and then there has been discussion about the northern trotter, which would be result of crossbreeding Finnish, Swedish and Norwegian coldblood trotters. I don’t know if there have been any experiments with this theory. Nowadays with all frozen semen exporting technology, personally I wouldn’t see these kind of experiments as a problem, but in larger scale it might eventually affect the purebred population, and we don’t want that to happen.

But, just to play with this hypothetical thought: what would the results look like IF we crossbred finnhorses with some other breeds?

I have been told there were a few official crossbreeding experiments with both lighter (trakehner, arabian) and heavier  (ardenner) horses in the early 20th century, but those ended up as disappointments and were given up at early stages. It is said that the gray color came to finnhorses as a result of crossbreeding with Russian orlov trotters, though this might have been before the finnhorse studbook was founded, so there’s no further record about it.

I searched for finnhorse crosses and found a few:

Trouble in translations: horse coat colors

How’s your Finnish? Yeah, kind of difficult if you don’t happen to be one of the about five million people of native Finnish speakers in the world, or one of those rarities who study it as a foreign language.

To help those of you who have developed a genuine interest in Finnish horses and want to go and discover more about their pedigrees on Sukuposti, for example. I have arranged a list of links that should help you get going with the mysteries of coat colors and markings, since they still don’t seem to translate very well.

All of these links lead to Hevosmaailma.net

Three-year-olds’ preliminary statistics 2012

HRP-blogi is a Finnish harness racing enthusiast’s blog where he writes about harness racing and its phenomena in Finland and other countries. He also makes annual statistics from young horses’ preliminaries.

The first preliminary is called opetuslähtö, a “training race” strictly translated. The goal is to encourage horse owners to bring their young horses to professional training already at young age and the trainers to bring the horses to tracks earlier. The time limits are 1.30-1.40 for the two-year old standardbreds, 1.50,0-2.00,0 for the three-year-old finnhorses and 2.00-2.20,0 for the two-year-old finnhorses. The horse receives a prize for trotting between those time boundaries, no other prizes are paid and this does not count neither in the horse’s winnings nor as an official start and is completely voluntary.

Before attending to official races, the horse has to attend another preliminary race, koelähtö in Finnish (strictly translated “test race”), in which the speed is faster. In this preliminary the horse shows that it is fit enough to race and is schooled to behave on the track. One preliminary is valid for eight months and if there are no races in between, the horse has to perform another preliminary to qualify again.

These are the brief statistics from 2012. You can see the full statistics here (tip: mares are highlighted with red and 2-year-olds with *).

Just out of general interest, I counted the three-year-olds in races annually between 1995 and 2012, here’s a graph:

graph (6)

It is not very common to bring the three-year-old horses to races rather than wait until they turn four. Finnhorse is considered as a slow breed to mature. The trend is, however, to favour the younger horses in race schedules to make the horse breeding cycle faster as well (so horses would race younger, show their potential and therefore breed younger than they do now). Naturally the amount of born horses in an age class shows in racing statistics as well.

Suikku’s influence is undeniable

When talking about modern finnhorse pedigrees, Suikku is one of the names that pops up constantly. He was a good trotter of his time, fast, matured early, won big age-class races, made a successful career as a trotter with records 1.24,3a and 1.26,9 but was never crowned as a trotter king. Yet he managed to have a huge offspring of 1240 horses, one of the biggest ever, and his son Turo even beat that record with his 1249 foals offspring, so you could say these names are getting very common in modern finnhorse pedigrees.

Get to know the finnhorse -brochure wrote about Veijo Toivonen, who remembers Suikku well:

“Veijo Toivonen from Orimattila has made a remarkable career in collecting Finnhorse  information first as a reporter and as an active member of the trotting association, later on as a keeper of a stud station and publisher of the Horsebreeding book series.

‘Suikku, driven by Tuomo Mäkelä in the 1980’s  has probably been the most talented  Finnhorse stallion that has been a stud at  our place. It never won the king title, but it had bad luck. But the leading studs in the sire statistics, Turo and Hovi-Ari, are its descendants, as well as the super trotter Sipori  (1.19,4a) and three-time Trotting Queen I.P. Sukkula. The sire line of Suikku comes from the star of the 1920’s and 1930s, Murto.  Murto and its son Eri-Aaroni have been the most influential individuals in the Finnhorse  breed. Nowadays their names appear in the family trees of nearly every Finnhorse.”

How to name a Finnish horse

Eri-Aaroni

Eri-Aaroni

There are trends in horse names as well as in people names. Some years people seem to want more traditional, even historical names, and sometimes names are so modern and foreign-sounding the naming board has to scratch their heads whether they should accept them or not. It is never a simple task, societies and cultures change and actually have never been very stable at all. What is common to naming horses, is that they tend to be very personal to the person naming them -breeder and/or owner,  sometimes their children come up with the names.

Before the beginning of systematic registration horses’ names were mostly simple and describing: Tamma (mare), Ruuna (gelding), Rauti (from rautias, chestnut), Pläsi (blaze). It didn’t matter if several horses had the same names, for example Poku and Polle have been so popular that even nowadays finnhorses in general might be called “pokus” or “polles” as a pet name in some occasions (such as “you have one nice polle here”).

Voiveikko is a good example of horses name traditionally referring to its color, palomino is translated as "voikko" in Finnish, referring to color of butter, "voi", photo by Sini Tuhkunen

Best quality animals were given fancier names. For example the first mare ever to be inspected for studbook was called Sofi. This was a trend and social aspect, since the best horses became famous and they were systematically compared to each other.

In the 1950s it was common to name horses with two-part names which would often refer to horses pedigree, such as names beginning with Eri-, Ero- or Aro (Aro-Meno, Eri-Aaroni).

Nowadays naming a horse can be influenced by hopes and dreams, humor or other aspects, as long as it’s max. 18 characters long, appropriate and can not be confused with other existing horses or trademarks. Finnhorse names should be either in Finnish with Finnish alphabet or Swedish with Swedish alphabet, and names beginning Aro-, Eri- or Ero- are not longer registered. (Hippos)

I need ideas for naming a finnhorse. Where should I start?

Lowchenaustralia has composed an impressive list of links to Scandinavian names. You could try for example searching through Finnish mythology, Finnish names and their meanings explained or have a look at your horses pedigree. It’s still quite common to refer the pedigree by combining or changing bits of names to new ones.

Best names are often short but bear a lot of meaning, hopes and dreams in them. Sometimes a good name is the one that sounds right even if it doesn’t mean anything. Most importantly, it has to fit your horse and the look your horse has in its eyes.

Finnhorse colors: Sabino

Sabino is the only gene finnhorses have that causes colouring in their body. Most often it shows as a blaze and high socks, sometimes also white spots somewhere else in the body (Stallion V.P. Jehu is a good example of this kind of colouring). It is quite unpredictable how much white is finally found in the foal, if any, but in very rare occasions this gene can produce even almost completely white horse, like what happened with Vekselin Ihme. Only his ears a re brown! :D

Quite famous example from early stages of finnhorse breeding is Valokas, the only trotter king that was never accepted for studbook because of his color. His genetics still seem to have passed through to quite big-blazed grandson Vieteri, a legendary trotter stallion with over 700 foals progeny, many of which have those big markings and even clearly shown sabino spots on them. Wonder what would have happened if the biggest names of finnhorse breeding of all time, Murto and especially Eri-Aaroni, would have been banned because of their coloring… Notice those socks and blazes on them as well. What a mysterious color this is!

Finnhorse colors: Silver colors

Silver dapple gene makes horse’s mane and tail turn grey or even white, while legs remain black. This gene affects only on black colour, so it can be well hidden in chestnut horses (flaxen is not silver) and pop out suddenly when a chestnut and black or bay horse are bred and produce a black or bay foal. This colour was registered mistakenly for a long time, so there is no certainty how common this colour has been before. With modern gene testing technology and knowledge about horse genetics, silver dapple bays and blacks can be produced systematically if desired. Pony-sized finnhorse breeding section seems to be the strongest one with registered silver gene carriers, but as said, in a mostly chestnut population it can still pop out somewhere unexpectedly. Finnhorse colors: Roan

Roan gene adds white hair on horse’s body, making it look a bit gray. The difference to gray colouring is that roans don’t turn more whiter as they age and their heads and legs remain darker than the rest of the body. Nowadays only one mare line produces roan horses, beginning from Sonja, a mare born in 1936. The only remaining roans seem to be related to  Sonja’s grand-grand-grand-daughter Taika-Tyttö, her two chestnut roan-coloured daughters Taikuriina, leading to young Taikan Muisto and Taika-Miku who had two bay roan daughters Taika-Varpu and Taika-Vappu, whose first foal Kadelma Kuu seems to be a rarity as well, a palomino roan! Taika-Varpu has had three rare-coloured foals up to date, of which Taikahuure being the first (and only?) roan-coloured finnhorse stallion in decades.

Finnhorse Colors: Gray

Gray gene makes a horse turn white as it ages. In finnhorses all the gray horses can be traced to a mare called Bismark. The amount of gray finnhorses has soared along the popularity of the  gray T-stud E.V. Johtotähti and his son, PR-stud E.V. Jovankka.
