Traveller’s thoughts on riding a finnhorse in Lapland

From Dashing Through the Snow… On a Saddled Finnish Horse (blogged 26.4.2013)
Kristin, a traveller from Australia, visited Kamisak Farm in Finnish Lapland in March 2013 and went for a ride on a finnhorse. You can read more about her adventures around the world in her blog “A Pair of Boots and a Backpack”, linked above.
What comes to mind when you think of animals in Lapland? Reindeer? Huskies? Polar bears (and no, they don’t actually live there)?
One animal I certainly wouldn’t have thought of before I went to Finnish Lapland was the horse. Like the cows that didn’t last very long in Honningsvåg, I thought horses wouldn’t survive in such a tough land, one that wouldn’t provide them with much food in the winter or temperatures that they would be comfortable in.
It turns out that I was very wrong. Finland is actually home to its own breed of horse, the Finnhorse, that is confusingly called a “cold-blooded horse.” No, they haven’t found a way to make a horse that’s not a warm-blooded mammal; in this case “cold-blooded” means that the horses are “muscular, heavy-set horses that are bred to be calm, steady, and patient.” Read more

Video: Run, my little horse
Posted by viivihoo in Art & Culture, Riding, Video on 17.5.2013
Krisse posted this video on her blog where she writes about her 3-year-old young stallion Rohkelikon Into. “Ukko” has been in training for the last two months with Vilppu at Ypäjä, preparing for the annual young horse show.
The song on the video is “Juokse sinä humma” sung by Tapio Rautavaara. Translation for the lyrics at Lyricstranslate.com:
Run my little horse
Run my little horse,
Since the sky is so dark
And the travel ahead is rather long.
In the end that girl didn’t come to my ride,
For I’m a boy on the wild side.
refrain:
Hey my little horse, hey my little horse,
Huputiti hey my little horse!
Run my little horse,
Since the sky is so dark
And we are going by slowly with the two of us.
Horse is the only treasure of a boy,
No-one else has quite alike it.
refrain2:
Hey my little horse, hey my little horse,
Huputiti hey my little horse!
Run my little horse,
Since the sky is so dark
And shadows are covering my way.
Quietly my song echoes from the road
And my flaxen horse is swaying its mane.
refrain2
Run my little horse,
Since the sky is so dark
And a bell is under the shaft.
Ohh, how small pieces
Is my bread across the world.
refrain
Run my little horse,
When the sky is so dark
And wind is moaning in the wood.
There’s a small cottage in the curve of a road
And Cherrylip is staying there.
refrain2
Hey my little horse, hey my little horse,
Hey, stop here my little horse.

Video: Siirin Älli
Posted by viivihoo in Harness racing, Video on 25.3.2013
Siirin Älli (Liising – Siirin Piirto – Viesker) is the best 4-year-old finnhorse trotter at the moment. Nine races, seven wins and two second places, winnings of 74 600 euro. His record 1.25,5a/2100m was also noted as the new Finnish record for four-year-old coldbloods.
Will he be the new Hallsta Lotus, time will tell, but he sure has shown promising signs so far!
In this video the Kierroksilla-show visited Siirin Älli’s home stable in September 2012. Trainer Marko Taittonen tells that he doesn’t have any special recipe for a top trotter horse, this horse simply seems to be born under lucky stars. Next year’s goal is also clear: to win the Derby.
Horseplay :)
Can’t help but smile for this one :)
Those girls and their horses…
“All horses deserve, at least once in their lives, to be loved by a little girl.”
- author unknown
It seems to be some kind of a trend among teenage girls to make this kind of videos of their horses. Youtube is full of them!
What is very touching in these, is the love these girls have for their horses and what they want to show to the world: “This is my horse, and she/he is the best horse in the whole wide world!”
Equestrianism is all about great feelings and experiences. Often they are the very first horses we get to spend time with that leave the most permanent hoofprints in our hearts. These girls are also assumably the main group of future horse owners and breeders. I think it’s a great thing to have finnhorses in riding schools and elsewhere in the “grass root level” of horse scheme, offering people a chance to get in touch with them. That is the ground where future horse people grow from. For many it is the late family horse or riding school favourite who gave them the spark for future (finn)horse enthusiasm.
Never underestimate a girl’s love for her horse!

Horse of the year-voting is open
Posted by viivihoo in Harness racing, Video on 29.11.2012
From Ravigaalassa palkitaan vuoden parhaat (Hippos.fi)
The annual Ravigaala (Trot Gala) awards the best horses, trainers and drivers for their accomplishments. Three of the awards are chosen by voting, and these three are Trainer of the year, Driver of the year, and the most interesting for many, Horse of the year award. There are traditionally two warmblood trotters and two finnhorses to choose from, this year those four are the rising international star Brad de Veluwe, furious racing mare She Loves You, ruling trotter king Erikasson and queen Sirun Valpuriina.
(Vuoden valmentaja=trainer of the year, Vuoden ohjastaja=driver of the year, Vuoden hevonen=horse of the year, Yhteystiedot=contact information, Nimi=name, Osoite=address, Puhelinnumero=phone, Sähköposti=e-mail).
The voting is open until 14th of December. All voters have a chance to win one of the five 100€ gift vouchers to Finn-Tack!
The Ravigaala takes place 18th of January in Tampere, Finland.

What class would you show a finnhorse in?
Thank you, anonymous Google user, for giving me another good topic to write about by visiting my blog with these search terms. Good question!

Finnish and international FEI dressage tests are somewhat similar. I tried to find the similarities and equivalences between Finnish and international (FEI) tests. The ultimate highest all-finnhorse class would be the dressage championship competition ridden annually at Ypäjä on FEI test B-level.
Finnish dressage tests have a hierarchy from C to A, easy to difficult tests, meaning that easy C is the most simple one whereas the A is always more difficult, before going to Prix St. Georges, Intermediate and Grand Prix levels. Those C tests are most often performed only in club and regional level competitions at highest. They include simple circles, a few lengthened strides, volts and diagonals. Easy B-level tests have more curves and volts in them, but are still somewhat simple. FEI uses the this level for 4-year-old horses dressage tests, for instance.
“Easy A” would be considered FEI test B, which FEI uses in tests fro 5-year-olds, including for example more collected and lengthened trot and canter.
Today the finnhorse dressage championship competition consists of two dressage tests, both in FEI test B-level, ridden on two separate days, one of them showing a kür program, including e.g. half-pirouettes, shoulder-in, lengthened and collected walk, trot and canter. Of course a finnhorse can attend to open classes to compete against warmbloods, and a few horses have competed in open classes on higher level, tests similar to this one.
R-studbook is still only about 40 years old, and has had a good influence on finnhorses ability to perform in dressage. They have become more popular among riders and received more training in dressage, even on professional level. Thanks to their great character and steady gaits there are also a few of them competing in Para Dressage competitions internationally. Maybe we have yet to see even a Grand Prix finnhorse some day!

I have posted this song before, but it has been a while. No Finn who loves finnhorses can listen to this with dry eyes, I think. Another tribute for the horses who helped to build Finland as we know it.
Where would we be without you
you four-legged, light-maned
moist-muzzled
friend, Finnhorse
I have no other earthly possessions,
the heaven’s roof, road’s carpet
forest trees for walls
for a friend, the Finnhorse
My grandfather cleared the fields
oats soon flowered, where the plough flew, –
be kind, horse
our friend, Finnhorse
As guns blazed in the Carelian isthmus
in the frost and snow
you were more reliable than the machine
our friend Finnhorse
These villages are empty
no roads cleared and the old left behind
but yet there are some
and some horses, too
When I leave this place
this road and roadsides
this slippery ice of a wintery road
bury me by my horse
For where would we be without you
you four-legged, light-maned
moist-muzzled
friend, Finnhorse
