Lassikko won the Kirppu-ajo

Lassikko shokeerasi Kirppu-ajossa (Hevosurheilu 19.8.2012)

Tuomas Pakkanen, Lassikko’s groom Mari Niskanen and trainer Ari Niskanen got to celebrate a surprise win. Photo from the article

This was the first mid-distance (2600m) race for Lassikko, but it seems to fit him well. He ravished the tote betting slips around, as his tote percent was only 1,35%.

The Kirppu race carries the name of the legendary trotter stallion Kirppu, who lived and raced in Lapland. The Kirppu-race has been held annually since 1980 in Rovaniemi, Lapland. The 2012 race was 33th.

Horseback archery with Pekko

Youtube user Trophybow1 does horseback archery. He bought himself a horse, finnhorse Pekko, and began training riding with him, aiming to become a horseback archer. This requires practice from both man and horse, but it seems that they are making progress on these videos he has posted.

This one is about introducing Pekko to the bow and arrows for the first time. He reacts just like a finnhorse normally does, watches carefully and when he decides it’s uncomfortable, he simply walks away, no rush.. heh. :D

Check out Trophybow’s channel for more videos of Pekko and archery.

Facebook event for Finnhorse’s day

Photo: Hippos photo bank / Irina Keinänen

The Finnhorse has been bred as a pure breed since 1907 when the studbook for Finnhorses was founded and systematic breeding work and pure breeding of the Finnhorse was started. We celebrate our national horse breed on 6th of September and welcome every finnhorse friend to join us.
Source: suomenhevonen.info

I decided to do some “Facebook-activism” and created an event to spread the word. The Finnhorse’s day is not yet very big, but is significant for those devoted to finnhorses. Some associations and stables may organize small finnhorse events locally. Spread the word and maybe organize something neat yourself?

Yrkkö

Kuukauden työhevonen: Yrkkö (työhevosharrastajat.net)

Photo from the article (see link above, also more photos)

stallion
s. 11.7 1992
s. Hilto
d. Osman-Vappu
Owner Matti Jarva
Breeder Heikki Jarva

Yrkkö was homebred by Jarva brothers, representing the third generation of work horses of Pääkkölä farm in Piippola. He got his name from a very tough, small worker stallion Yrkkö who was owned by Matti’s father Heikki after the wars.

Yrkkö has truly redeemed his name, he has grown a fine work horse. It feels like the horse reads Matti’s mind, and has brought every log home. Their record is over hundred cubics of log in one winter.

Yrkkö’s work is seasonal, the cultivation work on fields is done mostly with tractor. He has also performed on television and pulled wedding carriages.
Matti likes stallions, he has a young four-year-old growing up on the same farm. He is called Ihmeen-Urho, maybe a future successor for Yrkkö. “Anyone can have fish and bread -only a few get to have a good horse!” says Matti.
