Heikki-hevonen tehtiin paineilmaletkusta, puusta, vanerista ja tyllistä (kaleva.fi 13.9.2011)
Based on Arto Paasilinna’s novel, dramatized by Tommi and Janne Auvinen, the Sotahevonen (war horse) comedy play has been played at Oulu theatre since last October.
It is the second year in the Continuation War in 1942. The Stormovik plane carrying two Russian soldiers lands somewhere in Kainuu, Finland. The fuel has ran out, and the pilot lieutenant Savolenko and pharmacist Kunitsin have to solve the problem in order to continue their mission. The fierce adventure takes the soldiers to Nurmes market, where they meet their new neighing friend, Heikki the finnhorse.
Heikki the horse was made of pneumatic hose, wood, plywood and plover
Watch a video of Heikki on the set.
A red chestnut gelding Heikki walks around the stage at Oulu city theatre. He acts just as a real horse. He has also galloped around the Oulu market-square and is planning to do even more visitse there to meet the people of Oulu.
Heikki the finnhorse is a complicated combination of pneumatic hoses, plywood, wood, rubber bands, wig hair and stage plover. The mechanism is as hollow as the Troyan horse. This big puppet’s height is 170cm at withers. He was made by professional specialists Sirpa Törmä and Petri Haapakoski. On the stage he is moved around by a three-men team Inka Autio, Tuomas Kumpulainen and Antti Karjalainen.
Director Tommi Auvinen had wanted to bring the Sotahevonen novel on stage, but had trouble finding out how to carry out the war horse itself. The solution was found drom the UK, where similar horse puppets had been made for New London Theatre’s hit show War Horse. Their magnificent horses can bee seen at http://warhorselondon.nationaltheatre.org.uk/
London’s War Horse has been dramatized from Michael Morpugo’s children’s novel War Horse. Movie mogul Steven Spielberg caught on this same story and the movie War Horse premiered 28th of December 2011. See the trailer here.
Suikun Rilla celebrated in Paris

Suikun Rilla järjesti juhlat Vincennesin radalla Pariisissa (Hippos.fi 26.2.2012)
Suikun Rilla met the expections in Vincennes on Sunday. After a few question marks after Thursday’s race, he left nothing to question on Sunday. The French driver Franck Nivard drove Suikun Rilla just as Harri Sulku had told him to, and his tactics brought the 10 000 euro prize to Finland -along with the satisfaction of leaving behind very good foreign horses.
Sulku told he had known that Suikun Rilla would win.
- I was just trying to keep it in secret, he told happy. Suikun Rilla made a new personal record 1.23,4a. He is at his best when he trots barefoot.
- I am speechless in front of this audience, told Sulku feeling emotional. This was a dream come true for the whole family. This win means so much to me. I have always dreamt of driving in Vincennes. Suikun Rilla’s nickname is Elvis and as we saw, he can arrange quite a show! The trip was both vacation and celebration in itself. It is a great race and a good way to network with other horse people.
Sulku’s wife and daughter where also present celebrating Suikun Rilla. The French hospitality made an impression on the Finns. After a long way back home the stallion gets to rest, and then start his preparing for finnhorse trotting championships at Mikkeli in July.
The youngest member of the Finnish team, Juho Hietanen, kept the flag up high.
Feelis ja Provinssi at the parade. Their celebration was left yet to be seen.

Vinkale-Tyttö is not afraid of cold

Tämä peli ei muuten hyydy pakkasilla (iltasanomat.fi 21.2.2012)

Vinkale-Tyttö and her owner Tapio Virtanen have started a hobby. Photo from the article.
Already twenty-two years old finnhorse mare Vinkale-Tyttö was harnessed for logging some wood from the forest on a cold, bright winter day in Korpilahti, Jyväskylä. Working is nothing new to Vinkale-Tyttö, since she has even won a few work horse championships in earlier years, but now she and her 70-year-old owner Tapio Virtanen have started light working again as a fun hobby, told Tapio’s wife Leena to Ilta-Sanomat tabloid.

First race to Norwegians, still hopes for Sunday

The local driver Franck Nivard showed that he can handle also the coldbloods by tacking to win with Norwegian trotter Voje Nido. The Norwegians were in good shape all the way, since also the second and third places went to our neighbours with Rinde Kvikken and Tin Tveiten.
The Finnish team left for France with high expectations, but winning was not an option today. Ruletto finished best of the Finns placing fourth. Suikun Rilla finished fifth, while Provinssi and Feelis got disqualified.
Drivers were nevertheless happy with their horses and are aiming for better on Sunday’s race.

“Great horse, finishing fourth after a hard race. He had lot of energy and he worned himself out too soon. He was surprisingly energetic. I am feeling positive about Sunday” said Teemu Okkolin about Ruletto. The pair gained 1 200 euro for their fourth place.
Suikun Rilla would have done better if he had not got some bad luck along the way. Harri Sulku had to dodge the crashing Swedes in the last curve. Suikun Rilla finished below 1.19-km-time and placed fifth.
“We took Suikun Rilla’s shoes off, that saved us seconds. I didn’t have to ask him or even show him the whip at any point” told Harri Sulku. He is also feeling very positive about Sunday.
Hannu Hietanen drove Provinssi carefully, since the horse’s trot didn’t feel quite right.
“He has these problems sometimes, but I hope that he got rid of his stiffs in this race.” Provinssi was eventually disqualified because of his poor gait.
Feelis galloped to disqualification, but Jouni Törmänen saw that it was simply becase of too much steam. He is looking for vengeance on Sunday also.
New big prize race for “ordinary” finnhorses in Mikkeli

Tavallisille hevosille ison rahan kilpailu Mikkelissä (YLE Etelä-Savo 21.2.2012)
Slowly developed, so called ordinary finnhorses are going to get their own big-prized race. The final race for this 10 000 euro race is held in Mikkeli in June 3rd. The race is for horses with record 1.31 or slower. Participation fee is 120 euro and all payed horses get to participate the elimination races. The Suurmestaruus (grand champion) race takes also place in the beginning of June, so there will be lots of goodies for finnhorse fans even before the trotting championships races in July. :)
This new race with this concept is the first of it’s kind for finnhorses. Earlier the biggest winnings have been shared only in age-class races and open races for the top class horses.
- These “late closer” type races give a chance to many different horses. This concept is quite popular in the United States, tells Mitja Nummenmaa, the Finnish Horse Owners’ Association (SHKL) leader.
- The final day is going to be grat sport to watch. There will be rising stars as well as those horses who already have made their way to the top, says Kaj Närhinen from Mikkeli race track.

The prizes of the trotter queen and -king trotting races, also known as the finnhorse trotting championships, will have a bit bigger prizes than before. All the part-races will have a 12 000 euro first prize instead of the current 10 000 euro. Last time the prizes were raised was in 2005 when they rose from 9 000 euro/race to 10 000 euro/race.
The finnhorse trotting championships will be raced this year in Mikkeli on 21st and 22nd of July, and Mikkeli will also place their annual international race for warmbloods, St. Michel on the Saturday 21st with the first prize of (lowered) 30 000 euro.
- The prizes have aroused conversation for a long time now. We want to take this case to action with Hippos and show our support for these races as the main event of Finnish harness racing, told Kari Tiainen, CEO of Mikkeli race track.
The finnhorse trotting championship consists of three races of 1600, 2100 and 3100m in one weekend with the first prize of 12 000 euro each. Mares and stallions reace separately. The winners, trotter queen and trotter king, will be crowned as they reach the lowest total time in these three races and are honoured with winnings of another 30 000 euro. These races are held once year in a different track, this year at Mikkeli.

Never “just a horse”.

I found this on Facebook. It sums up pretty much everything so well that I simply had to post it here. With a little googling I even found the original author. The original “Just a dog” was authored by Richard A. Biby. Thanks!
Like if you agree. Happy Valentine’s Day!

Just a Horse
From time to time, people tell me, “lighten up, it’s just a horse,” or, “that’s a lot of money for just a horse.” They don’t understand the distance traveled, the time spent, or the costs involved for “just a horse.”
Some of my proudest moments have come about with “just a horse.” Many hours have passed and my only company was “just a horse,” but I did not once feel slighted.
Some of my saddest moments have been brought about by “just a horse,” and in those days of darkness, the gentle touch of “just a horse” gave me comfort and reason to overcome the day.
If you, too, think it’s “just a horse,” then you will probably understand phrases like “just a friend,” “just a sunrise,” or “just a promise.”
“Just a horse” brings into my life the very essence of friendship, trust, and pure unbridled joy.
“Just a horse” brings out the compassion and patience that make me a better person.
Because of “just a horse” I will rise early, take long walks and look longingly to the future. So for me and folks like me, it’s not “just a horse” but an embodiment of all the hopes and dreams of the future, the fond memories of the past, and the pure joy of the moment.
“Just a horse” brings out what’s good in me and diverts my thoughts away from myself and the worries of the day.
I hope that someday they can understand that it’s not “just a horse” but the thing that gives me humanity and keeps me from being “just a human.”
So the next time you hear the phrase “just a horse” just smile, because they “just don’t understand.”

The annual race for first-class finnhorses, Valkeala-ajo, was placed earlier than usual in this year’s race calendar in Kouvola. The first prize of 10 000 euro went to Provinssi with a huge coefficient of 29,87. This was a surprise for players, but raised great expectations for the Finnish team’s France trip at the end of February.

The worry about finnhorse’s future and narrowing pedigrees made Siru Saarinen and Mari Luukkonen interested in the one-year-old Tennari, whose pedigree is not so common these days. Sire line goes through Luonnos to Uljaanpoika and her maternal sire line through Ihme-Toti to Kirppu.
In this mare there are fine, calm nature and easy driveability in a stiff work horse body. Her work has included all sorts of driving, with a sleigh, a plow and even a hearse carriage. She is a dependable and easy-to work horse, which makes her perfect for any public occasions and even a teaching horse on a logging course.
In the year 2009 Tennari was taken to Toivo Pulliainen for training. The goal was to inspect her for the T-studbook and attend a few pulling competitions. Toivo trained her into fine shape, but got sick and deceased soon. Tennari’s most important job so far has been laying Toivo to rest at Pieksämäki 11th of June 2010.
As an obligation to her uncommon pedigree, Tennari has foaled twice. The sire has been both times stud called R.T. Sankari, also a horse with an uncommon pedigree. The first foal, now gelded Tohvelisankari was born in 2006. The little colt born in 2011 has a planned name Tuohivirsu.
