Erikasson’s comeback

Erikassonin häikäisevä comeback (Hevosurheilu.fi 29.10.2011)

Erikasson made a fantastic comeback from over six months break by winning straight. This was a happy surprise for his owners and trainer Bella Varjonen. “What a wonderful horse” she said. Erikasson was held from racing due to a hoof bone fracture in his hind leg.

Well, as they say -a good horse always comes back! Let’s hope for many healthy days to come for this great horse.

Stars’ Stable: Vieteri

From Tähtien Talli/Vieteri

Vieteri was a legend of his time. He won the Trotter King’s crown five times in 1973, -74, -76, -77  and -78. The stallion was naturally talented and proved it already in the 4-year-old Derby. Vieteri was also the first finnhorse ever to achieve winnings over 1 000 000mk.

He was great at stud too, leaving for example trotting king -86 Vireeni, four-time queen Valomerkki and double queen (1992-1993) Vipu.

Juhani Matela wrote a book about Vieteri. “Valtias Vieteri” was published in 1979.

A horse can be nominated to Stars’ Stable (Tähtien Talli) for outstandingly good performances in the trotting races. So far 8 warmblooded trotters and 8 finnhorses have been nominated. See them all at Hippos.fi / Tähtien talli

Yet again -a new Finnish record

Ekebo Moniquelle Suomen ennätys (Hevosurheilu.fi 14.10.2011)

The Finnish record for three-year-old mares was resculpted to numbers 1.31,8/2100m by Ekebo Monique at Pori on Friday 14th. This is 1,8 seconds faster than the previous record (1.33,6), which was  made last summer by Ainon Ilo (Posted August 17th 2011). This race was completely Ekebo Monique’s solo act, she even had the time to gallop shortly.

Riders have found finnhorse

Rough translation from Suomenhevoset nousukiidossa (Heidi/Satulahuone blog 15.9.2011)

Haavekuva has done a career of 45 starts in harness racing with record 1.28,2. After that he has redeemed himself in top-class dressage. He was inspected for R-studbook in 2005 with II-prize. Photo by Jasmina Sulkumäki

We have come a long way from those days, when finnhorses were looked down at. Today’s ridden finnhorse is rarely a good-for-nothing-ex-trotter, with zero actual gait. Besides breeding work, finnhorses have received professional riding and schooling – and look at that: the war horse has turned out to be pretty good riding horse as well.

Finnhorse is not for dogmatics

Finnhorse has become sort of an status symbol for a rider. If you own a finnhorse, you must be laid-back and down-to-earth person, regardless of the discipline you have chosen. Finnhorse brings the fans together -anyone can attend to a conversation about this years  champions’ pedigrees.

There are multiple reasons for risen interest in finnhorses, but one of the biggest must be the fact that Hippos and other organisations want to support it. Even before the Millennium many professional riders saw a chance to earn the petrol money for driving home by attending to a finnhorse class.

Finnhorses have had their own classes in jumping, eventing and dressage. Even though the competing level has been quite low, pony- or young horse level, the prizes are often higher than in a regular warmblood class. So it has become a trend for even professional high-level riders to have a few finnhorse projects in their stables.

Nowadays finnhorses have received the same proper schooling as the warmbloods. Most of the top-class finnhorses have experienced, skillful riders on their back. Actually it feels like every national level rider should have a finnhorse in their stable nowadays.

There are pearls waiting to be found

Despite of the risen quality of finnhorses, their prices are still quite low. This is also one of the encouragements for a finnhorse buyer. Sometimes an ex-trotter can make a great career in riding, if it has good gaits and if the rider knows what to do on the saddle.

The biggest improvement has been the quality of riding. Owners have started to realise how important it is to have a proper schooling for their horse, and the fact it is not the same than just sitting into the saddle and starting to wonder “which way should we go at what pace and gait”. The performances got high up as the professionals got interested in finnhorses.

Finnhorses bring attendance records to riding stadiums

Making prizes bigger makes finnhorse classes more interesting to attend, and it is a known fact that finnhorse classes interest the audiences as well. The annual finnhorse riding championships weekend at Ypäjä is currently one of  the most popular riding events in Finland.

Stars’ Stable: Vekseli

From Tähtien Talli/Vekseli

Vekseli was a superstar of his time. Pentti Savolainen’s home bred stallion won the Trotter King’s crown four times in a row in 1979-1982 and for the fifth time in 1984. The year 1984 was remarkable, since that year Pentti Savolainen’s other home-bred horse, mare Vekkuliina, won the Trotter Queen race. Never before, neither after, had the royal couple both same breeder, owner, trainer and driver. Besides this, Savolainen also was the breeder of another historical trotter king Vieteri.

Vekseli left 642 foals offspring and had one trotter king descendant: Vekke was crowned 1987 in Lahti.

Vekseli was one of the first horses nominated to Stars’ Stable, along with Charme Asserdal, Friendly Face, Keystone Patriot, Reipas, Vieteri, Patrik and Vonkaus.

A horse can be nominated to Stars’ Stable (Tähtien Talli) for outstandingly good performances in the trotting races. So far 8 warmblooded trotters and 8 finnhorses have been nominated. See them all at Hippos.fi / Tähtien talli

Horse sculptor Herman Joutsen

Bronzed trotter king Eri-Aaroni on Kouvola racetrack’s winner circle. Sculpted by Herman Joutsen.

Photo from YLE Kymenlaakso article on Kymi Grand Prix (“Kouvolan ravirata majoittaa maailmantähtiä” 17.6.2011)

Herman Joutsen is one of my top favourite horse artists. His sculptures are so detailed and realistic, I would really want to make artwork that good some day. I have seen this statue of Eri-Aaroni quite closely for several times (as I live nearby the track and visit there often) and I am still stunned by it. It’s like the horse could neigh any moment.

Besides Eri-Aaroni, Joutsen has sculpted also the legendary finnhorses Reipas and Eino, along with the war horse statue and many others, smaller and bigger.

He has a website, also in English (!), that shows his work and briefly about the man himself. I suggest you take a few moments to get to know his work. It is worth it.

Finnhorse beats the machines

Photo by YLE / Minna Kaipainen

Every third horse in Finland is a finnhorse. The amount of these horses was highest in the 50s, when there were as much as 400 000. Nowadays there are about 20 000 of them.

Seppo Kröger from Suonenjoki has been around finnhorses practically all his life. Since childhood he remembers the finnhorses were part of their everyday life: taking crops to the mill nd milk to town, wood from the forest and – of course – to church on Christmas. At war they were irreplaceable due to their calm  and tough nature.

As a co-worker a finnhorse is very humble.

- You could say they hav brains where they are supposed to be. They are wise horses and easy to school to anything. Besides they are not so tender to get sick and do not ask much, thanks Kröger.

Fuel is needed only at rest

The finnhorse population dropped in the 80s. Effective machinery put them out of work on busy farms.

Kröger still feels that finnhorse has its place on crops and forest farms. He uses Viklari actively for working at softened fields and young forests where machinery could make more damage than profit. He has calculated that it is also cheaper as nowadays the fuel prices have gone up dramatically.

Old equipment works just fine

Working equipment is not manufactured anymore, but one can find very well preserved sleighs, harrows and even swamp shoes for horses on the farms. If they have been stored in a dry, cool place, the equipment is most often quite easily fixable or just fine for taking back to work straight away.

Finnhorses bring joy and memories for the elderly

Hevonen ilahdutti palvelutalon vanhuksia (Uutisvuoksi.fi) 23.6.2011

Paula Jyllinvuori was not afraid of Vinskin Vire and wanted to feed her sugar. Riina Hermansson was glad to see how excited the elderly were to see the horse. Photo by Anniina Meuronen

Just seeing and touching the horse was an amazing experience for the residents of Kauppakatu retirement home at Imatra. The idea was started from Suomenratsut association’s challenge to bring horses to greet the elderly in February 2011.

Retirement home manager Marja Sormunen was also happy to have a horse for a visit.

- It sounded really great. We have had dogs visiting before, but never a horse. Many of our residents come from the countryside, so seeing a horse may bring back lots of memories, which also helps reviving their memory.
