Elmoori is a big favourite to win Saturday’s Kriterium race, the traditional age-class race for four-year old finnhorses. He ruled his elimination race however he wanted, and winning this race would make him the top horse of his age-class. The finals are held in Tampere this Saturday, 1st of October. Finnhorse Kriterium win pays 38 000 ero, which is the biggest prize there is for a single race in whole year.

Hiiro the fire horse

Hiiro, palohevonen (turku2011.fi)

Stuffed finnhorse found it’s place at Logomo’s Tuli on irti! (Fire! Fire!)-exhibition.

Living Hiiro was known as an active worker and sympathic, nice pet horse. Hiiro has already left this world, but her body still stands for special purposes.

Hiiro is the only animal in the Fire! Fire! exhibition. This finnhorse mare’s taks is to stand in front of a 19th century fire carriage. This fits well for Hiiro, as finnhorses are known as fearless and strong breed.

Finnhorse has a great role in Finnish history

Finnhorses have left their hoofprints in country’s history. People would not have inhabited and brought this land of wet swamps and backwoods without them. During the decades finnhorses have plowed hundreds of thousands of fields, pulled canoons to their positions and the wounded back to hospitals in the wars. The nomination of Finland’s National Horse has been earned.

Nowadays finnhorses serve as athletes. Hiiro’s pedigree was also full of trotters, but the mare herself was not so much into it, and worked better as a draft horse.

After Logomo’s Fire! fire! exhibition Hiiro can be seen at Turku castle, where she will be used on different historical exhibitions as well.

Fire! Fire! is about the firemen’s work in the 19th century. Besides Hiiro and the carriage, different firemen uniforms and fire extinguishing equipment is widely shown at Logomo until 18th of December 2011.

Stars’ Stable: Reipas

FromTähtien Talli/Reipas

Gelding Reipas was a well-known race horse of his time, who won everything he could (only stallions were allowed to compete of the Trotter King’s crown). He also competed against the warmblood trotters in Moscow in the year 1957. His story was a true cinderella story, since he was a shabby market foal who ended up at Aapeli Miettinen’s house by accident.

Back then it was allowed in the rules to compete in several races during one day. This gelding ran approximately 1300 races. Depending of the source, he had either 348 or 339 wins.

Artist Herman Joutsen sculpted a statue of Reipas. It was placed in his home keeper Varpaisjärvi (nowadays part of Lapinlahti).

He was one of the first horses nominated to Stars’ Stable, along with Charme Asserdal, Friendly Face, Keystone Patriot, Vekseli, Vieteri, Patrik and Vonkaus.

A horse can be nominated to Stars’ Stable (Tähtien Talli) for outstandingly good performances in the trotting races. So far 8 warmblooded trotters and 8 finnhorses have been nominated. See them all at Hippos.fi / Tähtien talli

Enough drama for one day?

Hallsta Lotus pohjoismaiden mestari (Hevosurheilu.fi 24.9.2011)

Myllarfaks put up quite a show. Photo: Harri Lind

The first attempt on Nordic Champioship race was about to bring blue-white colours and the singing horseman Pertti Puikkonen to the winner’s circle, as I.P. Vipotiina had ruled the race with queen’s attitude. Then one of the horses. Myllarfaks, crashed with Tähti-Optio, dropped his driver off the sulky and ran away. Usually the race would not been cancelled in the last 500m, but this situation seemed to be evolving into a catastrophe. The renewing race was moved to be the last race of the day, so the horses would get enough rest in between. Hallsta Lotus’s driver Ulf Ohlsson was not concerned about his horse, and saw this as advantage for them.

In the second attempt Marimin and I.P. Vipotiina fought for the first 500m in 18,5 km-time, before Hallsta Lotus took the first place and forced the Finns to back off keeping it that way until the finish line. Silver medalist was a great surprise, Köppinen with good spurt. Bronze Medal went to Norway’s steady Åsajerven, who would have also been third at the first time.

Nordic Championship race it at hand again!

PM-joukkueen suomalaisrunko kasassa (Turku race track website 12.9.2011)

The best coldblood trotters from Finland, Sweden and Norway are about to meet in the annual Nordic championship race on Saturday 24th of September. Finnish team has already been chosen.

This year the race is also a V75-quality division final, so the top four of V75-ranking horses have a pass to the race. The horses are I.P. Vipotiina, Kilun Peedro, Villihotti and Köppinen. Pihlajan Aaroni has also been signed. If there are not enough Swedish and Norwegian horses to participate, the remaining places will be filled by finnhorses.

The two-day races offer fun and excitement, besides the Nordic championship, also with L. Fabritius memorial – Åbofemman, an age-class race for five-year-olds with 10 000€ first prize and Kasvattajakruunu, the “breeder’s crown” finals for warmblood trotters, 5-year-old mares on Friday and 4-year-old stallions and geldings on Saturday.

Five one-year-old finnhorses at the auction 2011

Starinita Oy arranges a foal auction once a year at Ypäjä Equine College. This year the auction takes place 16th of September. Eighty-nine warmblood trotters and five finnhorses have been put up for sale. This is the biggest auction so far and is believed to grow even more over the years. See all horses here.

Naturally I am interested mostly in the five finnhorse foals. The catalogue “cover boy” Aapo Milleri has been performing well at the races. He was sold in the auction 2008.

The links on horse’s name will take yo to Sukuposti horse database and the PDF-link to the auction catalogue page.

Pony-sized finnhorses’ riding championships results 2005-2011

From Suomenpienhevonen.fi (and their facebook page)

Besides the riding championships, also the pony-sized finnhorses have had their own championships in dressage (since 2006), show jumping (since 2005) and eventing (since 2009). Besides that the pony-sized finnhorses have proven themselves very well-fitting for the driving classes. I posted earlier about Hessin Vihtori winning the driving championship this year (all the top three horses were pony-sized this year).

Happy finnhorse’s day!

Sixth of September was declared a a national flagging day in the finnhorse’s year 2007, when the studbook became 100 years old. In the year 1907 the Finnish horse also got it’s first breeding program. We can say the breed finnhorse was born. This year the studbook is already 104 years old.

To celebrate the finnhorse’s day, I start a new series of posts about the legendary trotter finnhorses.

Stay tuned. ;)

Three-year olds preliminary statistics 2010

HRP-blogi is a Finnish harness racing enthusiast’s blog where he writes about harness racing and its phenomenons in Finland and other countries. He also makes quite accurate statistics from young horses’ preliminaries.

This is called opetuslähtö, a “training race” strictly translated. The goal is to encourage the owners to bring their horses to professional training already at young age and the trainers to bring the horses to the tracks earlier. The time limits are 1.30-1.40 for the two-year old warmbloods, 1.50,0-2.00,0 for the three-year-old finnhorses and 2.00-2.20,0 for the two-year-olds from 1st of September 2011 onwards. The horse receives a prize for trotting between those time boundaries, no other prizes are paid and this does not count in the horse’s winnings and is not count as an official start.

Before attending to official races, the horse has to attend another preliminary race, koelähtö in Finnish (strictly translated “test race”), in which the speed is faster. In this the horse shows that it is fit enough to race and is schooled to behave on the track. One preliminary is valid for eight months and if there are no races in between, the horse has to perform another preliminary to qualify again. The age limits are the same as in all races, wb 2-14 yrs and finnhorses 3-16 yrs.

These are the brief statistics from 2010. You can see the full statistics here and follow the statitics of 2011 here (tip: mares are highlighted with red. It took me a while to figure that out…).

Two-year-olds can now attend to preliminaries

Kaksivuotiaat suomenhevoset opetuslähtöön (Hevosurheilu.fi 1.9.2011)

Vennelmon Voitto (Sipori – Voimariina – Ruutu-Poika) was the first two-year-old finnhorse ever to attend a preliminary.

Photo from the article (see the link above).

From the first of September onwards it is possible for the two-year-olds to attend a preliminary. Until now these preliminaries have been for the two-year-old warmbloods and three-year-old finnhorses. The purpose is to bring the horse breeding forward by encouraging horse owners and trainers to train their horses already at young age. The preliminary prizes do not count as horse’s winnings and this does not give the horse a license to race. There’s another preliminary race ahead before attending to the actual races. On this preliminary the horse earns it’s euro by trotting a 2100m between the time limits. For the two-year-old finnhorses it’s between 2.00,0 min and 2.20,0 min. Vennelmon Voitto’s time was 2.05,3.
